Resurgent Australian golfer Karrie Webb has moved up a spot to No.2 in the latest world rankings, passing great rival and long-time former No.1 Annika Sorenstam.
Webb’s runner-up finish in last week’s LPGA Championship to Norway’s Suzann Pettersen was enough to put her second behind Mexican Lorena Ochoa.
After winning five tournaments last year to revive her stuttering career, Webb has been solid if unspectacular in 2007 but showed signs of her best form last week.
The Queenslander fired a final round five-under par 67 in the $US2 million ($A2.38 million) event in Maryland to finish one stroke behind Pettersen and fall just short of an eighth major title.
Webb has three top ten finishes from nine events this year, earning $US401,790 ($A478,920), 11th on the money-list behind Ochoa and Pettersen.
Webb (11.86 points) still trails Ochoa (14.09) by some distance in the world rankings with Sorenstam (11.57) third.
Sorenstam, the eight-time LPGA player of the year and the Tour’s all-time leading money-winner, is a distant 30th on this year’s money-list.
Another Australian, Lindsey Wright, also made a big move up the world rankings after finishing in outright fourth at the LPGA Championship.
Wright jumped 31 places to No.62 after firing a blistering final round six-under 66 in Maryland, pocketing $US100,473 ($A119,760) in prizemoney.
Canberra’s Nikki Campbell, who plays on the Japanese tour, retained her spot at No.60, while Rachel Hetherington slipped two places to No.65.
